Indonesian choir claimed a total of 6 gold medals and 8 silvers medals Part I of this year’s World Choir Games – the world’s biggest global choral competition.

Hosted in the city of Graz, Austria, the 5th World Choir Games attracted 441 choirs from 93 different countries including the United States, Germany, Republic of Korea and Australia.

In the first round of medal presentations, Indonesian teams taking home a total of 14 medals.  South Africa surpassed all other teams taking home a total of 23 medals. Of these 15 were gold and eight silver. South Africa’s performance was followed by Russia who claimed a total of 18 medals (3 gold ) and Indonesia with 14 medals (6 gold + 8 Silvers).

The Elfa’s Singers Choir were crowned World Choir Games Champions in the Jazz & Popular Category. Beside that the Consolatio Choir from medan taking two Gold medals, Manado State University (1 Gold + 2 Silvers), Bitung Choral City (1 Gold + 2 Silvers), Sekolah pelita harapan bukit sentul (3 Silvers), Angelicus Indonesia Choir (1 Silver). 

Part II of the competition is currently underway as choirs compete in categories such as Large Male Choirs and Contemporary Music. Indonesian choirs having possibilty to take more medals entered Part II. The competition ends on July 19 2008.

The World Choir Games were launched in 2000 by Germany’s Interkultur Foundation and are run by Musica Mundi. This year’s competition is the largest ever held.
